DESCRIPTION:Please join the Spring Socialist Network’s reading group to read and discuss Solidarity Beyond Bars: Unionizing Prison Labour. We will be meeting on Sunday\, February 11 at 1 pm to discuss the book. Asaf Rashid\, one of the book’s authors and a Halifax local\, will join us for part of the discussion. \nFrom the publisher’s description:\n“Prisons don’t work\, but prisoners do. Prisons are often critiqued as unjust\, but we hear little about the daily labour of incarcerated workers — what they do\, how they do it\, who they do it for and under which conditions. Unions protect workers fighting for better pay and against discrimination and occupational health and safety concerns\, but prisoners are denied this protection despite being the lowest paid workers with the least choice in what they do — the most vulnerable among the working class. Starting from the perspective that work during imprisonment is not “rehabilitative\,” this book examines the reasons why people should care about prison labour and how prisoners have struggled to organize for labour power in the past. Unionizing incarcerated workers is critical for both the labour movement and struggles for prison justice\, this book argues\, to negotiate changes to working conditions as well as the power dynamics within prisons themselves. DESCRIPTION:Join Spring’s Toronto chapter for a discussion of key political issues as well as socialist strategy and tactics. The rapid escalation that took place from Bill 28’s introduction on October 31 to its defeat just one week later shows that labour is actually capable of harnessing its resources and energy on extremely short notice. In this case\, it had no choice: the pressure from education workers\, rank-and-file members in other unions\, and the wider public pushed the leadership into action. The existential threat of Bill 28 tipped the balance. \nThe question now is how could the labour movement start planning a similar escalation–for the moment these conditions emerge again (which could be sooner than we expect)–to defeat Ford on everything else we’ve been fighting for: reversing his privatization agenda\, defending public services\, repealing Bill 124\, protecting the Greenbelt\, defending labour standards\, winning a $20 minimum wage and Paid Sick Days\, and ending the misclassification of gig workers. \nThis is an in-person meeting at 720 Spadina Ave (near Spadina station)\, Room #202. We ask everyone to wear a mask. Doors will be open for light refreshments at 5:30pm and the meeting starts at 6:00pm.
