SUMMARY:Building power: Centering anti-racism and anti-oppression practice
DESCRIPTION:Capitalism’s contradictions necessitate inequality\, injustice\, and social division. Be it by race\, gender\, sexuality\, ability\, religion\, nationality\, or age\, people struggle unequally under a system that mandates their oppression. \nMarxist organization provides a framework for understanding exploitation\, strengthening fights against different forms of oppression\, and requires the centering of different oppressions in order to be effective. Learn in this class the relationship between capitalism and racism\, capitalism and other forms of oppression\, and how Marxism empowers those fighting inequality and injustice to fight back. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/228561755550008 \nReadings: \n\nKeeanga-Yamahtta Taylor:  https://socia7listworker.org/2011/01/04/race-class-and-marxism  \nClaudia Jones: https://palmm.digital.flvc.org/islandora/object/ucf%3A4865/datastream/OBJ/download/An_end_to_the_neglect_of_the_problems_of_the_Negro_woman_.pdf \nEsma Choonara: http://isj.org.uk/racism-institutional-structural/\n\nZoom Link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89893532788?pwd=dDRvRWg0UUt6ZGRZeUJjNkpqY0NtUT09 \nMeeting ID: 898 9353 2788\nPasscode: 766092\nOne tap mobile\n+15873281099\,\,89893532788#\,\,\,\,*766092# Canada\n+16473744685\,\,89893532788#\,\,\,\,*766092# Canada \nDial by your location\n+1 587 328 1099 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 778 907 2071 Canada\n+1 204 272 7920 Canada\n+1 438 809 7799 Canada\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington D.C)\nMeeting ID: 898 9353 2788\nPasscode: 766092\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kOwcAvrpW

And does this relate to elections? \nIn 2021 we are likely to face a federal election and many provincial elections. Join Spring for a discussion about how socialists should approach elections and the project of building working class power. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/414243043334615 \nSuggested reading: \nBeyond the New Democratic Party: https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/beyond-the-new-democratic-party \nZoom Link: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81574584186?pwd=SWt3YzVKK3ViT1U1Z1RIVjl2OXpZQT09 \nMeeting ID: 815 7458 4186\nPasscode: 578276\nOne tap mobile\n+12042727920\,\,81574584186#\,\,\,\,*578276# Canada\n+14388097799\,\,81574584186#\,\,\,\,*578276# Canada \nDial by your location\n+1 204 272 7920 Canada\n+1 438 809 7799 Canada\n+1 587 328 1099 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 778 907 2071 Canada\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\nMeeting ID: 815 7458 4186\nPasscode: 578276\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdj4ImBglM

SUMMARY:Getting organized for revolution
DESCRIPTION:Marxist economics provides an invaluable framework for understanding our world. However\, as Marx famously said\, “the point [of interpretation]… is to change it”. To actualize the possibility of socialism\, forces must collectively unite in order to be strong enough to confront the problems of capitalism. It is organization that provides the means for doing so. \nIn this session\, we will discuss the value of joining a socialist organization specifically and the strategy involved in building the movements that will overthrow capitalism. Through movements we struggle for reforms to the capitalist system with revolution as our aim. \nJoin us for the discussion. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/490522649014030 \nGetting organized for revolution\nFeb 18\, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83222435878?pwd=ejcyd0hUOWZpZm5uSWNuSjNvdFlrdz09 \nMeeting ID: 832 2243 5878\nPasscode: 183768\nOne tap mobile\n+15873281099\,\,83222435878#\,\,\,\,*183768# Canada\n+16473744685\,\,83222435878#\,\,\,\,*183768# Canada \nDial by your location\n+1 587 328 1099 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 778 907 2071 Canada\n+1 204 272 7920 Canada\n+1 438 809 7799 Canada\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\nMeeting ID: 832 2243 5878\nPasscode: 183768\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kclfnOzZOw

SUMMARY:Farmers' Protest: Resistance & Repression in India
DESCRIPTION:Millions of people have been moved into action as farmers in India resist the far right BJP government of Narendra Modi. Last year\, Modi pushed through 3 agricultural laws that will further impoverish India’s farmers and farming communities. \nThe laws remove the minimum price farmers receive for their crops\, remove the requirement of state support for farming communities\, and further shift the balance of power away from farmers to big corporations and tech firms. \nJoin us for this group discussion as we draw inspiration from the mass movement\, assess the political terrain\, and share lessons. \nSpeakers: \n-Navi Aujla is a leader in the Fight for $15 and Fairness and a community organizer based in Brampton.\n-Sarah Nafisa Shahid is a freelance writer based in Toronto\, mainly writing about film\, culture\, and art with a particular interest in the political and social implications of visual media.\n-Garry Sran is an Economist and a Senior Research Advisor at the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees. He lives in Edmonton. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/700662770626289 \nClick here to register to attend the meeting on Zoom

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Journalism
DESCRIPTION:The distribution of information is crucial to socialist organization. Through journalism socialists can connect “principles\, experience\, and the tasks of the moment”\, not only sharing ideas but delivering the necessary information people need to do something. For the Spring Socialist Network\, our magazine is the centerpiece of our organizing efforts to build movements and our organization. \nJoin us for this session\, we will explore the principles of socialist writing\, what that looks like in the 21st century\, the importance of ideas and debates to our movement\, and how writing enables us to effect social change. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/330281545083936 \nTo register for the event: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEtde2spjIvH9JeR3Mtn_t4lfF4B2z74ELO

SUMMARY:Spring Phone Zap for Paid Sick Days!
DESCRIPTION:April 28 is the Day of mourning for workers who have been killed or injured on the job. Many workers are taking action to mourn for the dead and fight for the living. \nWe are organizing a phone zap for paid sick days! Many workers still don’t have access to paid sick days. Low-waged and racialized workers are disproportionately impacted by the lack of legislated paid sick days for all. \nWe are going to call Tory MPPs and Premier Ford to tell them workers need paid sick days that are legislated\, adequate\, employer-paid and universal. Workers need paid sick days not policing! \nRegister for the Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAoceGvqz0rEtd3dXY6AJZHr1SyaNb9EOLC

SUMMARY:No Life Like It: A Tribute to the Revolutionary Activism of Ernie Tate
DESCRIPTION:We warmly welcome you to join us for a tribute to the life\, activism and legacy of Ernie Tate (1934-2021). \nErnie Tate believed capitalism is a cruel and unjust system that has to be changed. Ernie was born in Belfast\, Northern Ireland in 1934 and emigrated to Canada in 1955. As a Marxist\, union activist and revolutionary\, Ernie spent his life working to achieve that in organizing against the war in Vietnam\, in union struggles at Toronto Hydro\, for protecting universal healthcare and living wages\, and much else. Ernie\, along with Tariq Ali\, was a leading organizer of the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign in Britain\, worked for Bertrand Russell’s International War Crimes Tribunal and was a founding member of the International Marxist Group in Britain.’ In 2014\, Ernie published a memoir of his life on the far left in Canada and Great Britain called Revolutionary Activism in the 1950s and 1960s. This two volume memoir is an important resource for anyone interested in a gritty account of mid-20th century revolutionary movements. It has been a source of information for the 2020-2021 Undercover Policing Inquiry hearings\, taking place in England\, in which the illegal and immoral activities of police agents in infiltrating the left have been laid bare. \nErnie died on February 5th this year. Please join us to reflect upon and celebrate Ernie’s life\, activism and legacy with many of his comrades and friends from around the world\, including: Tariq Ali and Phil Hearse (England)\, Richie Venton (Scotland)\, Barry Sheppard and Suzanne Weiss (USA)\, Pam Frache\, Judy Rebick\, Carolyn Egan\, Sam Gindin\, Bryan Palmer\, Rob Fairley\, and John Riddell (Canada)\, and Patrick Bond (South Africa).\nThe event will be online\, on ZOOM. Please register for your free ticket on Eventbrite. A link to the ZOOM room will be sent to you. \nHosted by Socialist Project\, Centre for Social Justice\, Spring\, Resistance\, Green Left Weekly\, Socialist Viewpoint \nFacebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/294767865500363 \nRegister for the event via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/no-life-like-it-a-tribute-to-the-revolutionary-activism-of-ernie-tate-tickets-150849684467

SUMMARY:Reading Group: From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Join Spring Magazine as we read and discuss Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor’s book From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation. \n“The eruption of mass protests in the wake of the police murders of Michael Brown in Ferguson\, Missouri and Eric Garner in New York City have challenged the impunity with which officers of the law carry out violence against Black people and punctured the illusion of a postracial America. The Black Lives Matter movement has awakened a new generation of activists. SUMMARY:Winning Paid Sick Days in BC
DESCRIPTION:The BC NDP has promised to introduce permanent paid sick days starting on January 1\, 2022. No specific number has been introduced. Join members of Spring\, The Worker Solidarity Network\, frontline healthcare workers\, and more\, for a discussion on how we win paid sick days that are universal\, adequate\, employer- paid\, and accessible. \nSpeakers: \n\nDr. Amanpreet Brar\, Decent Work and Health Network\nAmrita Parmar\, BC LTC nurse\nPam Charron\, Community Engagement Coordinator- Worker Solidarity Network\nLaird Cronk\, President- BC Federation of Labour\nLisa Descary\, Spring Socialist Network\n\nThough this event features speakers and participants from across so-called BC\, it is important to center the fact that all of this territory today remains unceded and stolen Indigenous land. In all of our work and all of our efforts\, we fight against colonialism\, racism\, bigotry\, and all forms of oppression. We do not recognize this in the abstract. We learn through struggle and through the work of movements and organizations that are confronting the brutality of capitalism\, racism\, and settler-colonialism across Turtle Island and around the world. \nRegister for Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kdOupqz4qHtcjau12aRn-1rheyomytflp
