SUMMARY:Building power: Centering anti-racism and anti-oppression practice
DESCRIPTION:Capitalism’s contradictions necessitate inequality\, injustice\, and social division. Be it by race\, gender\, sexuality\, ability\, religion\, nationality\, or age\, people struggle unequally under a system that mandates their oppression. \nMarxist organization provides a framework for understanding exploitation\, strengthening fights against different forms of oppression\, and requires the centering of different oppressions in order to be effective. Learn in this class the relationship between capitalism and racism\, capitalism and other forms of oppression\, and how Marxism empowers those fighting inequality and injustice to fight back. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/228561755550008 \nReadings: \n\nKeeanga-Yamahtta Taylor:  https://socia7listworker.org/2011/01/04/race-class-and-marxism  \nClaudia Jones: https://palmm.digital.flvc.org/islandora/object/ucf%3A4865/datastream/OBJ/download/An_end_to_the_neglect_of_the_problems_of_the_Negro_woman_.pdf \nEsma Choonara: http://isj.org.uk/racism-institutional-structural/\n\nZoom Link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89893532788?pwd=dDRvRWg0UUt6ZGRZeUJjNkpqY0NtUT09 \nMeeting ID: 898 9353 2788\nPasscode: 766092\nOne tap mobile\n+15873281099\,\,89893532788#\,\,\,\,*766092# Canada\n+16473744685\,\,89893532788#\,\,\,\,*766092# Canada \nDial by your location\n+1 587 328 1099 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 778 907 2071 Canada\n+1 204 272 7920 Canada\n+1 438 809 7799 Canada\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington D.C)\nMeeting ID: 898 9353 2788\nPasscode: 766092\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kOwcAvrpW

SUMMARY:Socialists and Elections: What Brings Change?
DESCRIPTION:Where does the power of the working class reside\, the ballot box or the streets? How should socialists understand where social change comes from. And does this relate to elections? \nIn 2021 we are likely to face a federal election and many provincial elections. Join Spring for a discussion about how socialists should approach elections and the project of building working class power. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/414243043334615 \nSuggested reading: \nBeyond the New Democratic Party: https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/beyond-the-new-democratic-party \nZoom Link: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81574584186?pwd=SWt3YzVKK3ViT1U1Z1RIVjl2OXpZQT09 \nMeeting ID: 815 7458 4186\nPasscode: 578276\nOne tap mobile\n+12042727920\,\,81574584186#\,\,\,\,*578276# Canada\n+14388097799\,\,81574584186#\,\,\,\,*578276# Canada \nDial by your location\n+1 204 272 7920 Canada\n+1 438 809 7799 Canada\n+1 587 328 1099 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 778 907 2071 Canada\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\nMeeting ID: 815 7458 4186\nPasscode: 578276\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdj4ImBglM

SUMMARY:Getting organized for revolution
DESCRIPTION:Marxist economics provides an invaluable framework for understanding our world. However\, as Marx famously said\, “the point [of interpretation]… is to change it”. To actualize the possibility of socialism\, forces must collectively unite in order to be strong enough to confront the problems of capitalism. It is organization that provides the means for doing so. \nIn this session\, we will discuss the value of joining a socialist organization specifically and the strategy involved in building the movements that will overthrow capitalism. Through movements we struggle for reforms to the capitalist system with revolution as our aim. \nJoin us for the discussion. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/490522649014030 \nGetting organized for revolution\nFeb 18\, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83222435878?pwd=ejcyd0hUOWZpZm5uSWNuSjNvdFlrdz09 \nMeeting ID: 832 2243 5878\nPasscode: 183768\nOne tap mobile\n+15873281099\,\,83222435878#\,\,\,\,*183768# Canada\n+16473744685\,\,83222435878#\,\,\,\,*183768# Canada \nDial by your location\n+1 587 328 1099 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 778 907 2071 Canada\n+1 204 272 7920 Canada\n+1 438 809 7799 Canada\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\nMeeting ID: 832 2243 5878\nPasscode: 183768\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kclfnOzZOw

SUMMARY:Farmers' Protest: Resistance & Repression in India
DESCRIPTION:Millions of people have been moved into action as farmers in India resist the far right BJP government of Narendra Modi. Last year\, Modi pushed through 3 agricultural laws that will further impoverish India’s farmers and farming communities. \nThe laws remove the minimum price farmers receive for their crops\, remove the requirement of state support for farming communities\, and further shift the balance of power away from farmers to big corporations and tech firms. \nJoin us for this group discussion as we draw inspiration from the mass movement\, assess the political terrain\, and share lessons. \nSpeakers: \n-Navi Aujla is a leader in the Fight for $15 and Fairness and a community organizer based in Brampton.\n-Sarah Nafisa Shahid is a freelance writer based in Toronto\, mainly writing about film\, culture\, and art with a particular interest in the political and social implications of visual media.\n-Garry Sran is an Economist and a Senior Research Advisor at the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees. He lives in Edmonton. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/700662770626289 \nClick here to register to attend the meeting on Zoom

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Journalism
DESCRIPTION:The distribution of information is crucial to socialist organization. Through journalism socialists can connect “principles\, experience\, and the tasks of the moment”\, not only sharing ideas but delivering the necessary information people need to do something. For the Spring Socialist Network\, our magazine is the centerpiece of our organizing efforts to build movements and our organization. \nJoin us for this session\, we will explore the principles of socialist writing\, what that looks like in the 21st century\, the importance of ideas and debates to our movement\, and how writing enables us to effect social change. \nFind the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/330281545083936 \nTo register for the event: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEtde2spjIvH9JeR3Mtn_t4lfF4B2z74ELO

DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, Sudan’s mass democratic uprising toppled the country’s hated dictator\, Omar al-Bashir\, and secured a power sharing agreement between civilian leaders and the military with the promise of elections for a new government. The military has reneged on that pledge and carried out a coup\, arresting activists across the country. The people have now returned to the streets in mass numbers to defend their revolution. Join this meeting to learn about the situation and what you can do to build solidarity and support for the Sudanese people’s fight for democracy\, justice\, and equality. \nSpeakers: \n\nRabab Elnaiem\, Sudanese activist\, member of the Sudanese Workers Alliance for the Restoration of Trade Unions.\nMuzan Alneel\, Sudanese activist\, co-founder of the Innovation\, Science and Technology Think-tank for People-Centered Development (ISTiNAD) in Sudan and non-resident Fellow of the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP).\n\nSponsors: \nInternationalism from Below\, Tempest Collective\, Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE)\, New Politics\, Spring Magazine. \nRegister for Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwod-yvqTIoHNWsivZz_SwdjAZVll-Sa80v

SUMMARY:The Second Wave of Uprising in Sudan: Revolutionaries Speak
DESCRIPTION:Join Sudanese revolutionaries from on the ground to discuss the flourishing of revolutionary bodies and resurgence of the uprising in Sudan. \nThe 2019 revolution in Sudan\, which overthrew longtime President Omar al-Bashir\, was the earliest of a second-wave of uprisings that has swept from Algeria to Iraq\, reigniting the hope of the 2011 revolutions in the region.\nThe uprising\, known in Sudan as the December Revolution\, culminated in August 2019 in a civilian-military partnership\, for what was to be a “transition” to full civilian rule. But in October 2021\, a military coup drove out the civilian coalition partners. The resistance that the coup has sparked since has breathed new life into the revolutionary movement in the country\, and accelerated the evolution of organizing in a way that bears lessons for movements for social justice everywhere. \nIn response to the coup\, widespread mobilizations\, led by Sudan’s neighborhood-level resistance committees\, have produced ongoing strikes\, civil disobedience and protests demanding an end to the military coup and the formation of a fully civilian\, revolutionary government to decide the country’s leadership and its future\, and to reclaim control of its looted resources for the benefit of communities. \nRevolutionary bodies\, in particular the network of neighborhood resistance committees which now spread across the country\, have pushed the struggle forward beyond previous compromises. They have also offered an alternative model of resistance and governance that presents a clear break from the elite politics of the past. Though the revolution in Sudan has so far been formidable in the face of repression\, it faces immense challenges\, given the ways in which regional and international counter-revolutionary forces have coalesced to back the military. This leaves us with a crucial question: how can this struggle\, whose outcome will have consequences beyond Sudan’s borders\, go on to achieve its slogan\, “freedom\, peace and justice”? \nTo explore that question\, the panel will highlight voices and analysis of Sudanese activists who are deeply involved in the revolution\, and who will provide their take on the stakes involved and the aims\, strategies and tactics of the movement. The event also intends to create space for conversation to explore solidarity actions beyond Sudan\, in particular\, how to deepen ties with activists in the Movement For Black Lives and anti-racist struggles in the U.S. Join us for this important discussion.\nThe conversation will be held in Arabic and English\, with simultaneous interpretation to English. \nPanelists: \n-Muzan Alneel is a cofounder of the Innovation\, Science and Technology Think Tank for People-Centered Development (ITSinaD) — Sudan and a nonresident fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP)\, focusing on a people-centric approach to economy\, industry\, and environment in Sudan. Recent writings include The People of Sudan Don’t Want to Share Power With Their Military Oppressors (Jacobin) and Why the Burhan-Hamdok deal will not stabilise Sudan (Al Jazeera). \n-Monifa Bandele (moderator) sits on the policy table leadership team for the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL)\, as well as the steering committee for the New York-based Communities United for Police Reform\, representing the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement in both coalitions. Just in the past decade\, she led the launch of two historic and successful legal cases against police misconduct (Daniels v NYC and Floyd v NYC); worked to pass landmark police reform legislation in New York City (Community Safety Act 2013) and New York State (Repeal CRL 50-a bill\, Special Prosecutor\, and NY STAT Act); and was a contributing writer to M4BL’s Vision for Black Lives and the BREATHE Act. \n-Abdulsalam Mindas is an Agronomist with a Bachelor in Agricultural Studies from Sudan University of Science and Technology. He is the official spokesperson for the coordination of Ombada Resistance committees and one of the two official spokespersons for the resistance committees of greater Omdurman. \nThis event is sponsored by Africa Is A Country\, Haymarket Books\, Internationalism From Below\, Jadaliyya\, the Review of African Political Economy\, Spring magazine\, and the following departments at Bryn Mawr College: Africana Studies\, Latin American\, Iberian and Latina/o Studies (LAILS)\, Middle Eastern Studies\, Political Science. \nREGISTER through Eventbrite to receive a link to the live stream the day of the event: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-second-wave-of-uprising-in-sudan-revolutionaries-speak-tickets-262749489797 \nThis event will also be recorded and live captioning will be provided.

SUMMARY:Capitalism: A Socialist Introduction
DESCRIPTION:From the fight for climate justice to the movement to defund the police\, more and more people are concluding that capitalism itself is the problem. Understanding *how* capitalism works (or doesn’t)\, where it came from\, and its internal weaknesses and contradictions is a key part of the struggle to overthrow it. \nJoin this discussion for an introduction to how socialists analyze\, criticize\, and organize against capitalism. Some questions we will ask: Where does profit come from and how does it drive the system? What is racial capitalism and how does it help us understand where capitalism came from? What did the pandemic expose about capitalism’s weaknesses and contradictions? \nIntroduction by Khaleel Grant \nSuggested readings:\nUnravelling Capitalism: A Guide to Marxist Political Economy\nBy Joseph Choonara\nEmail Spring for an e-version \nGeographies of Racial Capitalism with Ruth Wilson Gilmore – An Antipode Foundation film\nhttps://bit.ly/3uyjOjZ \n“What Did Cedric Robinson Mean by Racial Capitalism?”\nBy Robin D. SUMMARY:Lessons from Combahee: Black feminism\, socialism\, and oppression today
DESCRIPTION:In the fight for justice today\, it has been vital to understand how gender\, race\, class\, sexuality\, and ability condition our economic exploitation and shape our identities. How do different forms of oppression interact to shape our experience of capitalism? What is identity politics’ role in our fight to build socialism? How do we confront racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, ableism\, and other forms of oppression in our struggle against capitalism? \nThroughout movements\, these questions have often been ignored or trivialized. Nevertheless\, from the contributions of Black communist women like Claudia Jones and Black feminist organizations like the Combahee River Collective\, a rich tradition exists to help socialists tackle these questions in our present. \nJoin this discussion to learn about the crucial innovations of Black socialist and feminist women and help us apply these lessons in our struggle against capitalism and oppression today. \nSpeakers: Fathuma Jama and Patricia Meyer. \nHow We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor\, ed.\n(DM Spring for e-book) \n“Identity Crisis” by Salar Mohandesi in Viewpoint Magazine (March 16\, 2017)\n(https://viewpointmag.com/2017/03/16/identity-crisis/) \nAn End to the Neglect of the Black Woman! by Claudia Jones\n(1927554_DP0000333) \n“Race\, class and Marxism?” by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor in SocialistWorker.org (January 4\, 2011) (https://socialistworker.org/2011/01/04/race-class-and-marxism) \n“About the We”: Drawing from Legacies of Black Feminist Praxis for Workers’ Rights Transformation\n(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfJi0iKmyFo) \nEmail info@springmag.ca for Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Whose Labour? Whose Organizing? Socialism and the Racialized Working Class
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event has been rescheduled to Friday\, July 22 due to the Rogers outage on our previous date of Friday\, July 8. \nDiscussions about the working class have a tendency to make assumptions about who the average worker is; namely\, a white\, straight\, cisgender male breadwinner working in a unionized industry. This tendency erases the rich and ongoing histories of racialized worker organizing and movement work that have won hard-fought gains for all workers over the years. \nJoin Spring on Friday\, July 22nd at 7pm EDT for a discussion on class\, race\, and the political work of the multiracial working class. \nEmail us at info@springmag.ca for the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Is Revolution Possible? Lessons from Sudan\, Philippines\, & Sri Lanka
DESCRIPTION:Revolution seems to be on the horizon after popular uprisings in Sudan\, the return of the Marco dynasty in the Philippines\, and tens of thousands of people taking over the streets in Sri Lanka. Massive hikes in inflation\, unemployment\, and fuel shortages mark the immediate crisis of capitalism in these countries as people struggle against starvation and political repression. Protestors endure repression through surveillance\, imprisonment\, and extrajudicial killings. \nDecades of neoliberal reform\, ushered in by ruling elites\, have led to massive cuts in education and healthcare and the deepened poverty of farmers\, labourers\, and students across the Global South. But the story doesn’t end there. Regular people fight back and build movements for their liberation. \nWhat are the prospects for revolution in Sudan\, the Philippines\, and Sri Lanka? How do we build a united struggle? What role do global imperialist powers play in propping up repressive regimes? And what lessons can we learn from these global struggles as we build the strength of our movements here? \nJoin us on Saturday\, August 6 at 12:00pm EDT for a discussion with activists involved in the global struggle against capitalism\, imperialism\, and oppression. \n🚩Muzan Alneel is a Sudanese engineer\, Marxist activist\, and blogger.\n🚩Myka Jaymalin is a Filipina researcher and community organizer with Anakbayan Toronto.\n🚩Krisna Saravanamuttu is a writer and community organizer with deep roots in the Tamil liberation struggle. \nThis session\, a part of the Spring Socialist Network’s summer convention\, is open to the public. \nEmail info@springmag.ca for the Zoom link.
