SUMMARY:Spring Reading Group: "Climate Change as Class War: Building Socialism on a Warming Planet"
DESCRIPTION:Join Spring on Wednesday\, September 7\, 7pm EDT for the first session of our reading group on Matthew T. Huber’s “Climate Change as Class War: Building Socialism on a Warming Planet.” \nHuber’s book argues that despite capitalism’s vital role in causing the urgent climate crisis we now face\, the climate movement finds itself more appealing to the upper classes than the working class. To address the climate crisis\, Huber proposes and argues for a climate movement led by workers that builds our collective power to transform systems and create international solutions that work for the many and not just for the few. No matter where our interests lie – climate movements\, worker movements\, decolonization and Indigenous sovereignty – Huber’s book offers much for us to discuss as a group as we learn how to build our world together. \nIn this first meeting\, we will be discussing Part 1 of the book. All are welcome. The book is available direct from Verso (https://www.versobooks.com/books/3973-climate-change-as-class-war)\, or send us an email. \nEmail us at info@springmag.ca for the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Spring Halifax Reads: "Gentrification Is Inevitable and Other Lies"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Spring Socialist Network’s reading group to read and discuss Leslie Kern’s “Gentrification Is Inevitable and Other Lies.” We will be meeting on December 12\, at 5-7 pm\, at 6208 Quinpool Road\, Unit 102. \nWhat does gentrification look like? Is it a process that replaces one community with another? Who does it affect the most? Is there any way to combat it? We hope that this book will better ground our analysis to understand and resist gentrification in Halifax. \nKern\, who previously authored “Feminist City\,” is an associate professor of geography and environment and director of women’s and gender studies at Mount Allison University. She will be making an online appearance during our meeting! \nThe e-book is available to read through Hoopla\, an app you can access through your Halifax Public Library membership. \nThe book is available from Verso. The book can also be purchased at Venus Envy

SUMMARY:Solidarity Beyond Bars: Halifax Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Spring Socialist Network’s reading group to read and discuss Solidarity Beyond Bars: Unionizing Prison Labour. We will be meeting on Sunday\, February 11 at 1 pm to discuss the book. Asaf Rashid\, one of the book’s authors and a Halifax local\, will join us for part of the discussion. \nFrom the publisher’s description:\n“Prisons don’t work\, but prisoners do. Prisons are often critiqued as unjust\, but we hear little about the daily labour of incarcerated workers — what they do\, how they do it\, who they do it for and under which conditions. Unions protect workers fighting for better pay and against discrimination and occupational health and safety concerns\, but prisoners are denied this protection despite being the lowest paid workers with the least choice in what they do — the most vulnerable among the working class. Starting from the perspective that work during imprisonment is not “rehabilitative\,” this book examines the reasons why people should care about prison labour and how prisoners have struggled to organize for labour power in the past. Unionizing incarcerated workers is critical for both the labour movement and struggles for prison justice\, this book argues\, to negotiate changes to working conditions as well as the power dynamics within prisons themselves. The book can be purchased at Venus Envy and Bookmark.\nhttps://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/solidarity-beyond-bars \nThe event will be held at a member’s residence. Please email paniz.ksy@gmail.com if you would like to attend.

SUMMARY:Spring Reading Group - Palestine: The Case for Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join Spring on Sunday\, November 5 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT / 8pm AT over Zoom for a reading group discussion on Anne Alexander’s article\, “Ending apartheid in Palestine: The case for a revolutionary strategy.” \nWith the Palestinian working class having to organize under constant violence for decades at the hands of the perpetually funded and armed Israeli occupation apparatus\, and with sources of Israeli funding and machinery not directly dependent upon the exploitation of Palestinian labour\, Alexander argues that fighting back against apartheid will require the revitalization and cooperation of revolutionary movements across the Arab world — not to forsake the Palestinian liberation movement\, but to expand and deepen it. \nClick here to register for the reading group\, and click here to access the reading.
